Thermodynamic system

Thermodynamic system

The small region of the universe which is taken under study with ultimate objective is called a thermodynamic system.
It is a collection of components performing to complete a task.

Boundary

The medium which separates the system from its surrounding is called the boundary of the system.

Surrounding

The component outside the thermodynamic system is called its surrounding.
[System and surrounding is collectively called universe]

Thermodynamic system :

1. Open system :

The system in which there is transfer of both mass and energy across the boundary is called open system. It is also sometimes called control volume.

2. Closed system :

The system in which there is transfer of energy and work across the boundary is called a closed system. In this system, mass remains constant. It is called Control mass.

3. Isolated system :

The system in which there is no transfer of energy as well as mass, it is rigid and closed. Simply, we can say, isolated system has isothermal process and adiabatic process.
