A short Review of the film: "Pashupati Prasad"

Pashupati Prasad: A crematory of women

The film” Pashupati Prasad” hit the record of box office and earned the more money than the production team may have expected. It is obvious because it is above the average. For years, Nepali movies had been presenting low-skilled character in acting. Although the number of films only had life like characters, it is numbered in this type of films.

Despite the film has presented a life like characters, it is put under a questions regarding its representation of marginalized people. Almost the characters are male. Only two female characters; Budhi Ama and Bune are presented, who are also as a disabled persons. They are compelled to live under the blessing of males. Ama, is presented an old-aged single woman takes shelter in Pashupati Temple. She becomes happy when he gives her medicine and foods. It shows that female is subjugation of male even if he is how much poor and weak. She is not totally depended in wealth to be fed but she expects some helps.
The film is a continuation of patriarchal attitude on presenting the female character as a emotional object. An old woman called by patriarchal identity “ama” is dependant to another male character Pashupati Prasad even after her deportation from her own son. She is wealthy and she owned a big building in Kathamandu valley has not been used for her livelihood. Her only one son and daughter in low throw her out of her. She doesn’t search legal way to be herself a strong character. She accepts the love and affection of one male after another; an orphan instead of her own son. Indeed, she is presented in a stereotypical character of women. The dependant thought given by patriarchal program has bound her unpredictably. Her love and empathy become subtle in comparison to Pashupati Prasad.
As the same character seems reliable for male character and he gives every things as if she is a real guard of property of male’s earnings. “ama’’ is the most reliable character where as his uncle seems silly and unreliable. He gives the money to “ama’’ to keep it safe as early he finds his uncle a notorious. The plot is waved to show the puppet of male on the behalf of his happiness. She is portrayed as divine spirit for him. It is because he has nobody with him at the time when he lost his parents. But, ama’s own son presents her as stubborn and irrational. She is presented as irrational vividly when she rejects her son’s offer to return back to home.
Not only some scenes presented against the women it is rather more than viewer expected. The traditional way of presenting the women is across the film. The view point of male domination over the female is objectification. Females are feeble, weak and subject of sympathy. The female protagonist’s position is clearly downed by giving her a younger member of community as “bune”. This type relation always squeezes into the certain boundary. Inexperienced, fresh, childlike and feeble people are called as bune, fuchchi and the so on in our society. Moreover, a traditional type of falling in love is shown where most of the hero goes to save the girls; has made the film synchronic of old.
As we know that a dumb person cant express his or her feelings and thoughts in community so as the situations are knowingly or unknowingly created. The presentation of Bune as dumb deprives her from putting her feelings towards him. The Director Khagendra Lamichhane has not given justice to the female character Barsha Shivakoti. For example, Bune comes near to the male protagonist to make him happy but mot for the discussion of their future plan. She becomes romantic when she dreams of future. It’s a very emotional presentation.
