Speaking of Children
The essay “Speaking of Children” is written by an American
writer Barbara Holland. This essay is an extract from her one of the famous
volume, Mother’s Day or The view from in here, which was published in 1980.
In this essay, the essayist Holland strongly presents her
idea and beliefs in having a single child and having more children. She stands
in favour of having single child than to have more children. She believes that
one child in a family is an appendage. But more than one is a way of life. One
child is outnumbered. Parents easily can brainwash, bring him or her up, can
take to the parties, toss it on the bed with coats, in a way , they can make
whatever they want. It is very easy to rear and care with a special love and
affection. So, they take a child as a part of their life. But plural children
are a counter culture in a house. They can have a lot of demands and desire of
children which the parents forcefully should try their best to quench. They
have to buy many toys and clothes and can’t go away from the weekend where they
like. They have to shift from one place to another for better school.
Similarly, they have spent their valuable time in social – converse. They are
pushed backward. There can be seen the continuous interruption of children
while the parents are having a talk. Above all, there is no peace and
prosperity in the family. Daily routine of the family can be imbalanced and
irregular. After all, there is a bitter look in everyone. There is a strong
dissatisfaction among the children and parents because children create a king
of ominous atmosphere in house where there is not tranquil environment. So,
parents should share their personal affairs by phone from office.
Furthermore, the writer clearly states that healthy marriage
life can be adopted / maintained if a wife spends her private time with her
husband. Many marriages break up in America because of children. So, plural
children in this regard are a real danger for the family. Parents get tired off
making aware the children in house because they often commit the new disastrous
activities. As a whole, mothers of plural children have no peace and happiness
in their life. They have to sleep with startling suddenness and finality or
determination. So, the essay is strongly against having more children.
