Computer Generation :-
The classification of
the different phases of the development of the computer on the basis of the
devices used, architecture, languages, modes of operation, their functions,
efficiency, orientation and storage capacity are called generation of computer.
The different
generation of computer is characterized by a major development of technology
and they are mentioned below.
A. First generation
Computers :-
a. They used vacuum tubes in them.
b. They were had huge size and
occupied large space.
c. They were very efficient but had
limited programming capability.
d. The system cost and working cost
were very high.
e. They were used commercially only.
B. Second generation
computers:-
a. They used transistors in them.
b. The costs were relatively low in
comparison to the first generation computers.
c. They were more accurate and
dependable.
d. Magnetic tapes and punched cards
were used for input and output operations.
e. They consumed less energy, were
user friendly and were faster that first generation computer.
C. Third Generation
Computers:-
a. They used integrated circuits in
them.
b. The size was reduced and consumed
much lesser energy.
c. Speed was nanoseconds.
d. They were more reliable and had
huge storage capacity.
e. They had both scientific and
commercial applications.
D. Fourth Generation
Computers:-
a. Smaller, cheaper, reliable and
accurate.
b. Speed was picoseconds.
c. Used magnetic disks and were
applicable for general purposes.
d. Micro computers were introduced
with application softwares.
e. Input and output devices were
more refined.
E. Fifth Generation
Computers:-
a. Will use super conductor
technology.
b. Will incorporate ULSI (Ultra
Large Scale Integration).
c. Hardware and software will be
cheap.
d. These computers will have
artificial intelligence.
