Classical Concept of Oxidation and Reduction:
According to the classical concept, oxidation is the chemical process involving addition of oxygen or addition of electronegative radical or removal of hydrogen or removal of electropositive radical and reduction is the chemical process involving removal of oxygen or addition of hydrogen or removal of electronegative radical or addition of electropositive radical.
Oxidation and Reduction in terms of Oxidation Number:
In terms of oxidation number, increase in oxidation number is called oxidation and decrease in oxidation number is called reduction
Modern Concept of Oxidation and Reduction:
Modern concept of oxidation and reduction is also known as electronic concept. According to electronic concept, oxidation is the chemical process involving loss of electrons whereas reduction is the chemical process involving gain of electron.
Oxidation
- Loss of Electrons
- Decrease in negative charge.
- Increase in positive charge.
- De - electronation
Reduction
- Gain of Electrons
- Increase in negative charge.
- Decrease in positive charge.
- Electronation
