Williamson’s Systhesis of ethers

Williamson’s Systhesis of ethers

Williamson’s systhesis can be utilized for the preparation of symmetric, assymetric and aromatic ether.
Alcohols both aliphatic and aromatic upon reaction with NaOH gives sodium alkoxide and sodium phenoxide respectively. These compounds upon reaction with haloalkane produces ethers.

Limitations of Williamson’s systhesis of ethers :
1.  Tertiary alcohol, tertiary haloalkane and haloarene are not used because of their low reactivity.
