Iodoform Test

There are some specific compounds which upon reaction with Iodine and Sodium hydroxide gives the yellow crystal of iodoform. This reaction is known as iodoform test.

The compounds that give iodoform test are :

a.       Ethanol

b.      Acetaldehyde

c.       Acetone

d.      Compounds with –OH and Carbonyl group (-CO-) in carbon number 2.

For example :-
