Hell – Volhard – Zelinsky reaction / Halogenation of carboxylic acid

Hell – Volhard – Zelinsky reaction

Halogenation of carboxylic acid

Carboxylic acid reacts with chloride in presence of red phosphorus to give α – halocarboxylic acid. This reaction occurs in the presence of Red phosphorous. In this reaction, the hydrogens present in the α – carbon is replaced by chlorine one at a time. This reaction is known as Hell - Volhard - Zelinsky reaction.
