Condensation reactions of Aldehydes and Ketones

Perkin Condensation

When an aromatic aldehyde with no α – hydrogen is treated with aliphatic acid anhydride having at least two α – hydrogen like acetic anhydride in presence of Sodium salts of respective acid produces a α-β unsaturated acid called Cinnamic acid. This condensation is known as Perkin Condensation.

Aldol Condensation

When aldehydes and ketones with α – hydrogen react with each other in presence of dil NaOH, β – hydroxyaldehyde or β – hydroxyketone is formed. This process of condensation of aldehydes to produce a compound with functional groups –OH and –CHO is known as aldol condensation.

Benzoin Condensation

When benzaldehydes react with each other in presence of alco. KCN, then a compound is produced called benzoin and this condensation is known as Benzoin condensation. This condition is reversible by nature.
