Leveling

It is the determination of difference in elevation or levels. Elevation is the vertical distance above or below a reference level called datum. In general, Mean sea level is taken as datum.

Uses of leveling:

1. Engineering works and construction projects.
2. To determine the undulation of the earth's surface.
3. Highways, railways, canals, sewers etc. needs leveling to a great extent.
4. Control of various elevations in buildings, bridges, dams etc.
5. To determine volume of earthwork for roads, railways etc.
