Decarboxylation reaction / Soda – lime reaction

Soda-Lime reaction or Decarboxylation reaction

Carboxylic acids upon reaction with NaOH gives Sodium alkanoate.

Sodium alkanoate then reacts with NaOH and Calcium Oxide to give alkane of 1 carbon less than the parent compound.

The carbon molecule is eliminated as CO2. Hence, this reaction is also known as decarboxylation.
